Perfect Jobs for Shy Teenagers

So you don’t have the most outgoing personality and the thought of getting a first job this summer working directly with customers, making sales calls, taking people’s orders, or standing at a cash register has you wishing summer would never come. But we have some great news for you! There are plenty of first jobs that are perfect for those of you who are just a little quieter and more reserved than your outgoing peers.

If working primarily with customers isn’t high on your list of ideal assignments, here are your best bets for a first job:

  • Stock rooms: Whether selling groceries, clothes, books or DVDs, almost every retail outlet has a back room where extra products are stored and designated employees are responsible for keeping the merchandise organized and sales floor fully stocked. In this type of position, working directly with customers is limited, but you will still learn to work with a team and to be responsible for your work.
  • Kitchens: Similar to working in a stock room, working in the kitchen of a restaurant helping to prepare food, wash dishes or bus tables will get you valuable first job experience without forcing you to make small talk with customers.
  • Offices: If working in retail or in a restaurant isn’t for you, a great place for a first job is doing administrative work in a local office. Responsibilities will typically include data entry and filing and will give you valuable office experience that you are almost guaranteed to use in future jobs. These jobs usually require a resume and a cover letter so make sure you have one prepared!

While it’s a great idea to find a position that fits your personality, remember that all jobs require working with others and being a part of a team. In fact, your first job could be just what you need to build your confidence and allow you to become just a little more outgoing!
